Hey Guys

So still needing some help here, planning on heading back out there tomorrow or Monday my cell is 901-270-0121. The LR3 likely only needs snow chains but I'd like to take more than my Jeep in case events repeat themselves.

The Story

While riding with my friend/co-worker in his LR3 we were scouting a race course without much thought to it. The trail was gravel then 2 inch snow pack which quickly turned to icy stuff that the street tires couldn't handle. We tried for over an hour and a half to push the damn thing, dig out the tires, try every electric setting we were allowed to touch but it became very clear that even with less than an inch of icy crud in front of the tires it would go no where. We literally cursed the damn thing until we were blue in the face because even a civic could be pushed out of this. We decided that without anyone else out here, no cell service, and a race we had committed to time the next morning(our jobs) we should start walking home and resolve this proactively. GPS in the car said we were pretty much in the middle between Leadville and the middle of no where we came from; so we left a note on the windshield, brought any clothing9all casual cotton), food(two GUs), and water(an empty plastic bottle). Leadville was somewhere between 14-17 miles as the crow flies but heading back was equally bad for cell service and considering how far we were from anything I decided to go where I would get a call in quickest before someone started to worry. My friend Tony was in tennis shoes, I was in Birkenstocks. The first few miles of walking was ok but then the snow drifts started as did breaking through the crust. It. Was. Awful. We got stuck at 11am, at 4:15 we finally got a signal at the top of the pass/Continental Divide. We called my friend, my g/f and the forest service(which didn't hold back on telling us how stupid we were for trying to drive on a pass that had been closed for a month). Forrest Service told us to call the sheriff, they ended up calling Search and Rescue. We were getting damn cold at the top, our feet had been soaked for hours, my shoes were actually frozen solid and serious thoughts of true frostbite were becoming a reality. We said we didn't want to be rescued(yet) and that we just wanted to tell people what was going on and if we didn't call back after 9pm that we were in trouble. When we were able to keep moving(not standing around trying to get a call out) it wasn't too cold except for our feet. The worst part, since we were not even "trying" to go off-road, had no intention of doing anything stupid we hadn't even had breakfast or in any way even remotely prepared for this sort of hike. Tony simply wanted to take a different route back and I, in my not so awake state, said sure and before you know it we have a pretty serious problem on our hands. Anyway, we could see the lake, the lights of Leadville but it was dark, windy and still very far away. Somehow we got second wind and began moving with some speed, downhills were prevalent and appreciated now. 6:25pm my friend sends a text "snowmobiles dispatched", and 10 mins later as we are walking down the trail nearly to the lake, 3 sleds show up and the rescue guys are all jacked up as they slide into to see if we are who they are looking for. They throw some helmets on us and fly back to the trucks(my hands have never been so cold!). Situation could have been a lot worse, the search and rescue asked us a few questions, made sure we were ok, said that since the other side is rarely gated this situation actually happens more often than you'd think. They were even nice enough to say that we did the right thing by called before it really was a serious situation. Better yet I bought a search and rescue insurance card 2 years ago and they are good for 5 years so they will actually be reimbursed for it. We figured out we actually hiked 16 miles in all the wrong ways....

Long story short, that LR3 hasn't moved and we could use some help getting it out, if you can help please call me 901-270-0121 - Patrick

Snow chains for the Jeep and LR3, a HiLift Jack and lots of food and clothing are ready to go. Heading back out tomorrow, wish me luck!

901-270-0121 if anyone is around tomorrow morning and feels like having a little vehicle recovery fun.

Attempt had to be delayed again while snow chains were ordered, Napa said they had them yesterday but when we showed up this morning they did not. We simply do not feel confident trying to go get it unless both the LR3 and my Jeep have chains.

If anyone is in the area and wants to help, please let me know, we are a tad anxious about it, but who knows after the chains are on it might be as simple as putting it in drive...fingers crossed
